At Your Own Pace is a pulmonary exercise programme to support the health and wellbeing of people living with lung conditions.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a programme of physical activity and education designed for patients living with a chronic lung condition. It’s recommended by national and international guidelines to help promote healthier lifestyles and improve patient understanding of their disease. It has proven effective in helping individuals self-manage their condition and reduce the burden of disease for both the patient and healthcare systems.
The global Covid-19 pandemic has meant that many patients enrolled on a pulmonary rehabilitation course have been unable to attend their sessions. In response, we have created At Your Own Pace, a pulmonary exercise programme that people living with chronic lung conditions can do from the comfort of their own home.
Created and endorsed by respiratory physiotherapists, the programme offers a selection of simple exercises to help build muscle strength, improve balance and increase stamina. Encouraging individuals with lung conditions to be active every day can help reduce breathlessness, improve quality of life and reduce anxiety and depression.
As many patients living with COPD or other chronic lung conditions may find the idea of exercise intimidating, all the activities can be modified to accommodate different levels of fitness and mobility. As the name suggests, At Your Own pace empowers patients to take control of their fitness and wellbeing, so they can better manage their symptoms. Participants are invited to set their own pace and gradually build towards a full routine over time.
Each exercise has simple, clear instructions and can be done while sitting or standing up. There are 3 different levels of intensity to choose from, giving the individual the option to increase the effort as they grow in strength and confidence.
At Your Own Pace is available as a printable exercise handbook and an online video. Both feature friendly animated characters that bring to life each exercise in easy-to-follow steps.
